The Nexus 6P was the result of Google teaming up with the Chinese manufacturer Huawei to produce the second six inch mobile phone in the Nexus range. The phone was developed in just seven months, an unusually short development cycle for a modern smart phone. The two companies worked closely on the project with Google exerting significant design control over the build. Despite the challenges for Huawei, such as working with an aluminium design and global compatibility, the project was described as a dream project and allowed them to get their brand out into the Western markets.
Announced in September 2015 it follows just a year from the first big screen Nexus, the Motorola made Nexus 6. The phone also introduced finger print scanning and the type-C USB port to the Nexus hardware line.
Of course the arrival of the phone also coincided with the release of Google’s Android M, Marshmallow, operating system. This introduced a number of new features into the Android system, such as official finger print support, an overhaul to the Android permissions system and the “doze” mode that allows these phones to use minimal power when not in active use.
Nexus 6P Review
The professional review looked upon the Nexus 6P favourably with many seeing it as a big improvement on the previous Nexus 6 and others hailing it as the most consumer focused Nexus phone to date.
Nexus 6P Buyers Guide
The Nexus 6P has been available since the back end of 2015, you can buy it direct with no contract from Google’s Play Store but it is also available from a range of other traditional stores.. It comes in three sizes and three colours.
If you are wondering what size to buy, 32gb is probably adequate for most, but 64 is useful if you like to store a library of music or video. 128gb doesn’t seem quite worth the premium price to me but your mileage may vary, if you really need that space – at least you have the option this time round.
Personally I prefer buying my phones up front, contracts have their place but you typically pay a higher price in the long run. And at this price you might want to check that your home insurance covers loss, theft etc.
