There is a lot of debate about whether a 10″ or 7″ screen makes for the ideal tablet size. I think ultimately it comes down to personal taste, but if you are trying to make this decision for yourself then it will be helpful to read different people’s thoughts and you can decide which one will be the best for you.
Does the Nexus 7 fit in my Pocket?
Obviously the trade off for a smaller, lighter, more portable tablet is a reduction in screen size. Having always felt 10″ models were a little too large and somewhat unwieldy I jumped at the chance to get the 7″ Nexus tablet.
But is it really more portable? Does it pass the pocket test? Well yes, the Nexus 7 fits comfortably in my trouser pocket, although realistically I can’t see myself commuting to work like that. When summer is over (did it ever start?) and I get my coat out again, I can see myself slipping the N7 into my coat pocket, but I have noticed a number of people on Twitter also proclaiming that their’s fits snugly into their trouser pockets.
A work colleague eyed up my tablet yesterday saying that the 7″ form factor would fit perfectly in her handbag, it even had an inner pocket that could have been designed to hold the N7! No change with a 10″ model.
Which is the best tablet size, 10″ or 7″?
I think it is true that more space is better and given the choice I would want to be on my large professional desktop monitors, but I don’t want to walk down the road with them! So after that I guess it’s all about how much space you think you need versus how portable you need the tablet to be.
The size debate will continue on I’m sure, there is even a rumour that Apple will dent their reputation as a leader and decide to follow the 7″ trend with an iPad “mini”, seems unlikely to me but we’ll see.
One thing I have learnt is that there is no point trying to persuade someone that one size is better than the other once they’ve made up their mind! Each to their own.
