In the second of three posts looking at security, we take a look at how to encrypt the contents of your Nexus 7. This will ensure that your Google Accounts, app data, music and other media, downloaded information, and the rest are encrypted to prevent your information and data falling into the wrong hands.
Nexus 7 Data Encryption
For many, it will be enough to simply protect your Nexus 7 using the usual entry mechanisms such as a pin code, pattern unlock or even face recognition.
However if you are working with sensitive information, perhaps you use your tablet to review corporate data, or maybe you are just keen to maintain maximum privacy, but either way, you have the option of encrypting your Nexus drive to make it very very difficult for anyone to get into your personal data.
How to Turn on Data Encryption
The following steps show you how to implement encryption on your Nexus 7.
Warning: Encryption is irreversible. The only way to revert to an unencrypted tablet is to do a factory data reset, which erases all of your data.
Step 1 Preparation:
- Set a lock screen PIN or password.
- Make sure your battery is fully charged.
- Plug in your Nexus 7.
- Allow an hour or longer for the encryption process, interrupting it will lose you data.
Step 2 Setup Encryption
- Touch Settings > Personal > Security > Encryption > Encrypt tablet.
- Read the information about encryption carefully.
The Encrypt tablet button will be dimmed if your battery is not charged or your tablet’s not plugged in. At this stage you can change your mind, just hit the back button.
Warning: If you interrupt the encryption process, you will lose data.
- Press Encrypt tablet.
- Enter your lock screen PIN or password and hit Continue.
- Press Encrypt tablet again to begin.
Encryption can take an hour or more, during which time your tablet may restart several times. Remember, do not interrupt the process.
When encryption is complete, you’ll be prompted to enter your PIN or password. You will have to enter your PIN or password each time you power on your tablet to decrypt stored data.
