I’ve used AndNav in the past to store maps offline but apparently Android 4.1 will allow us to store google maps offline? I think this is a really cool feature and I hope it is easy to download map sets in advance.
It will be cool to take the N7 out and about on the road and use it for navigation and without 3G connectivity we’re going to have to have some kind of offline storgage capability for map software.
Anyone used this yet and care to share how it works?
click the 3 little squares in the to right corner and then select ‘make available offline’. You can then pick an area to download. The greater manchester area is about 50mb.
Thanks, I was wondering about this too. Am going to download London!
Awesome – I just assumed it was still connection only and downloaded navFree which is a bit fiddly. I’ll take a look at this later and make sure I prepare maps in advance (as a backup to my satnav :D)
tbh I prefer the google maps so it’s a nice addition. I’ve used AndNav2 for offline maps in the past
I hadn’t realised that the GPS function in the N7 works fine without WiFi and can be used with Google Navigation as a SatNav. First, I went to Google MAPS and downloaded a large map area that covered where I wanted to go, then I found my destination, tapped on it and hit the route planner to select the route and then I just tapped on the little blue arrow which takes you into Navigation mode and off it goes – worked just like a Tom Tom. Worked brilliantly. Only issue was that the turn-by-turn directions’ voice was very quiet and hard to hear. Also, the navigation function wouldn’t work on the way back – it needs a WiFi connection to start again, which is puzzling ‘cos the GPS still works fine without the WiFi and I could see where I was, moving along the roads etc all theway home.
