Can anyone tell me if it is possible to plugin my 3G dongle? eg via an OTG cable?
Or is MiFi the only option.September 27, 2012 at 12:47 pm #2228
Hi, I’ve heard people have successfully used this app to get 3G Internet working via a dongle on their Nexus 7:
In fact, a quick scan of the reviews and I can see Nexus 7 owners are managing to make it work OK for them. This is actually very interesting and not something I had considered.
I have a 3G dongle sitting at home, pop a Giffgaff sim in there and perhaps I’ll have data on the move? Actually I bet my dongle modems are locked to their original networks. I have one from three and one from orange but neither with a working SIM atm.
Still, this seems a very interesting option… has anyone else been using this app, or similar to get mobile Internet on their tablet?
Note: Ah, this is for rooted devices.September 27, 2012 at 1:18 pm #2231
Why not use your phone as a wireless hotspot? Had to do that yesterday using my Nexus 1. Settings, Wireless & network settings, then tethering & portable hotspot and turn it on.
It worked surprisingly easily and well.September 27, 2012 at 2:25 pm #2232
My phone doesn’t support it :(
But my next one sure will… ;)September 28, 2012 at 4:25 pm #2254
I have done the same with my old HTC desire. Or at least the man at the O2 shop did it for me. I don’t stream live stream so shouldn’t go over my limit. Waiting to see if O2 notice and start charging me.October 2, 2012 at 11:41 am #2312
Many suppliers now block tethering. But it is allowed on three’s one plan…November 4, 2012 at 9:34 am #9477
I was going to buy a dongle but now I think it might be better to spend a bit more and buy a MiFi. Means that my partner and I will be able to use both our N7s when we are out and about together, and of course – no dangly bit hanging off the end. Was going to use giffgaff, but I see that you can get preloaded SIM cards from Three with 3 GB data on them and valid for 3 months for just over a tenner on Amazon.November 4, 2012 at 1:27 pm #9522November 6, 2012 at 9:29 am #10109
I bought a mifi from 3 mobile… £29.99 for the router then £15.99 a month for 5gb on a month by month contract…. its very good and pretty fast too … it worked out much cheaper going to the 3 store than buying the exact same package from PC world etc.November 6, 2012 at 1:27 pm #10168
MiFi looks like a good solution, especially if there are a couple of you who need ‘net access.
What’s the battery life like?November 14, 2012 at 8:52 pm #13479
Try Samba mobile for a cheap-ish dongle option.
This provider uses the 3 network.December 11, 2012 at 1:38 pm #24619
Samba looks interesting, http://www.sambamobile.com/
Ad supported broadband. I like the idea of that for a device that you might need occasionally. For example I have a mobile dongle at home that I’m not using but I could get one of these SIMs and pop it in on the odd time I need it.
Would have been great when I was a student!
I think if I were using mobile data regularly then this wouldn’t be for me though.December 14, 2012 at 10:07 am #24663
After christmas I intend to go round the phone shops , N7 in hand, and ask for a live demonstration of a prepay 3G dongle, just to see if any of them have the correct software loaded. If I can see one working I’ll buy it!January 23, 2013 at 9:19 pm #25395
I use a 3g dongle on my laptop when I’m away from home & use a free download called virtual router which sets my wifi up as a hotspot then I connect my Nexus 7 wifi to my laptop wifi which gets me on the internet with my Nexus. No need to root your Nexus. Bit fiddly to set up had to uninstall & reinstall but it took me about an hour to get sorted now it works great.
