Hi all, not logged in for a while, been enjoying my N7 tablet, and no issues with it. Love the pure Android experience.
My old school Galaxy S+ is finally due an upgrade, and whilst I’m a Samsung fan, I don’t like all the “Extras” they pile on top of stock Android.
If the Google version of the S4 was available over here, I’d get one. But it isn’t, so I’m thinking to replicate my N7 with its little brother. 4G isn’t a huge requirement for me. I’m on Vodaphone. Bizarrely, they don’t offer the N4, but apparently I can get one via Carphone Warehouse acting as an agent, and keep my direct relationship with Vodaphone.
So off to the local CW tonight as soon as Mrs G gets home. Am I doing the right thing? Any N4 issues I should know about? Any must have accessories. I’ve read mixed reports about the Orb. My daughter in NYC could ship one over to me.

Well, got the phone. So far so good. All Google stuff sync’d over. Need to import contacts and pics, but very happy for now :-)June 5, 2013 at 4:31 pm #26585
Welcome to the dual owners club! A colleague has the S4 and despite being “Android” I have to say I felt lost trying to use it. I went over to his desk saying “no worries” I’ll help you get going but I really struggled to navigate around the Sammy interface.
That’s not to say I think it’s a bad interface, I just don’t fancy having to learn another way of doing everything!
I’ve had no probs with mine, it does get quite toasty which is a bit disconcerting but I guess one has to trust it’s within operating parameters! I’ve always been very impressed with the speed of the thing, mines seems noticeably smoother than my N7.
The other criticism I see from people is the slippy surface, if you don’t have a cover you need to be very careful about where you put it down. Mine slid of my sofa’s arm on day one, fortunately onto the sofa and not the hard wooden floor the other side.
Accessories…. I’ve only bought a backup power pack which is a total life saver for me, but you may have little need for one. I also got the SlimPort HDMI connector out of curiosity. It works well but it’s not something I would recommend unless you have a real need for it. I imagine I might use it on holiday to get iPlayer to the hotel TV etc.
A cover seems sensible as the “tough” Gorilla glass is still only glass! I don’t have one and suspect I will regret that.
The Orb seems a nice idea but I can’t quite bring myself to buy one! Maybe sooner or later.June 8, 2013 at 8:28 am #26592
Thanks Jez. The more I use it, the more I think I’ve done the right thing. I’m on the senior side, and having the N7 already means the whole thing is very familiar, right out of the box.
I’m actually a big Samsung fan, but didn’t want them chipping in with their “must have” stuff (must have, only in their minds). Vodaphone are as bad :-(
Pondering cases and bumpers now. My daughter could source an Orb for me but some users have experienced slipping. If it was a flat pad I’d have got one, but the conventional charger is no hardship. I’ve got Allshare (Samsung’s DLNA app) on the telly so if I can side load that on to the N4 (it worked on the N7) I can share stuff without the Slimport thingy, which does seem expensive for what it is. I can see it’s usefulness though when we’re on one of our £29 Premier Inn jaunts and on their wi-fi.
Anyway, for now, I’m like a dog with two d*cks :-)June 10, 2013 at 1:31 pm #26623
If you don’t like the look of the ORB, the Nexus 4 should be able to wirelessly charge with any QI compatible charger.
But like you, Im happy enough with a cable. It’s a shame the battery pack doesn’t last a little longer, but for the most part I don’t feel Im power watching throughout the day. I can’t help thinking another 20-30% would put my mind at ease. I could probably get that by being more careful with the apps I use :/June 10, 2013 at 1:32 pm #26624
PC Advisor are a bit Apple-centric for my liking, so pleasant surprise to see their “Best Smartphone” is the N4 (and the 7″ tablet, the N7).
Then they revert to form, best 10″ tablet, iPad. But still.June 10, 2013 at 1:36 pm #26625
Might well be an app thing, nx7. I’m pleasantly surprised to see how much juice is still left on mine at the day’s end.
