The Nexus 7 is a tablet that I’ve enjoyed using quite a bit, but ever since the OEM desktop dock leaked for the tablet, I’ve been feeling like I’m missing out. It may seem a bit odd, but allow me to explain why.
I’m simply anxious for the pogo pin dock to be released because I want to get the most out of my Nexus 7. This is one tablet that I intend to keep for some time, and I’d like to have a nice setup. Primarily, it is quite annoying to fumble around with plugging in the Nexus 7, when there are perfectly good pogo pins there that I simply can’t use. It isn’t an issue of laziness, just disappointment that I can’t use features that are already built into the tablet.
I’d also like to use the dock for audio out to my surround sound system. It would be great to be able to drop the tablet in a dock, have an NFC tag there to enable “music mode,” and then control the music from my Nexus 7. Yes, this would be possible with a bunch of cables, but I don’t want to waste time putting together a custom cable based setup when the 4 pin pogo dock would work much better.
The reason I mention this isn’t just to complain, but to comment a bit on how Google handles their devices. Something that makes all of Apple’s hardware quite appealing is the varied mass of accessories available for each device. Admittedly, this isn’t as practical for Android when there are so many different devices on the market, but it doesn’t help that Google hasn’t managed to offer an official accessory. In fact, for a while even the basic grey Nexus 7 case was listed as “coming soon,” and while there are plenty of replacements, it doesn’t make Google look quite as competent.
Some are blaming this issue on a miscommunication between Google and ASUS, or just think that the demand for a pogo pin Nexus 7 dock isn’t great enough to warrant a release. However, while it may seem insignificant, I think that accessories like this can affect some user’s device experience a great deal, which is why I hope Google will get this sorted out soon, and continue o make the Nexus 7 a better experience. With the advance of the Nexus 10 tablet Im seriously hanging on in there and hoping that not only will google release landscape pogo pin audio docks in two sizes but also release its official leather premium cases, all in time for Christmas. It’s all about the experience nowadays, after all, google and it’s hardware can only go so far without the support of official quality accessories.November 4, 2012 at 1:31 pm #9525
It does seem strange doesn’t it, apparently they are selling a million of these a month so there is clearly a massive market. And if they aren’t making much money on each unit then surely here is an opportunity to up the profits a little.
Docks would clearly be popular, I see a tonne of tweets sharing the same sentiment.November 10, 2012 at 1:36 pm #11607
I have now posted this thread to Contact Us @ Asus…asking if they indeed carry both the rumoured pogo pin dock and premium leather cases. If so will they be released for Christmas. Watch this space Nexus 7 lovers!November 10, 2012 at 7:58 pm #11731
The lack of docks is fast becoming a talking point, I’m seeing it cropping up in a number of places and the view seems to be that this is becoming an epic fail.
Let’s hope something changes fast…November 16, 2012 at 5:44 pm #14573
Well as promised I have recieved a response from Patrick Wesseling Asus Service Team regarding the above. This is the reply: “Currently there are no plans to sell this in the UK. Kind regards”
So thats the official line …does this mean that these items exist and are for sell in other countries?
these items for christmas presents will be out of the question this year!November 20, 2012 at 4:23 pm #17029
I agree all around. I would really appreciate the pogo dock for when I am doing work at my computer, and want to have a favorite tv show playing along my main monitor. Not only that I prefer using my nexus 7 for all of my digital contacts including most email, and having it there to chime and easily access and reply is something that is redundant with my current casing. Having to open, and or unlock every 10 minutes has become slightly annoying. Lack of quality accessories is definitely an issue for the nexus line.November 22, 2012 at 2:57 pm #18246
Im in total agreement with what you guys are saying, why not sell the dock when their selling a million Nexus 7s a month and reportedly going to sell 5 million over the holidays. With just the Nexus 7s sold in 2012 they could probably unload acouple million of these docks to waiting consumers like me. It seems kinda weird that Google is putting pogo pins on all their devices, when so far the only 1 that ive found has one for sell is the Galaxy Nexus on Google Play. Asus, Google whoever please release the damn docking station.November 25, 2012 at 3:51 pm #20145
I’m in the market for another 2 devices and I’m not willing to invest in an additional nexus tablet until this is addressed.November 29, 2012 at 9:41 pm #22684
Agree totally. I’d love one of these docking stations.December 1, 2012 at 8:50 am #23334December 1, 2012 at 8:51 am #23336December 1, 2012 at 9:44 am #23345
….and not before time!…I’m dribbling with excitement already! …..It seems they have either done a U turn on their decision to sell in U.K ref November 10th & 16th comments Patrick Wesseling Asus Service Team, (above) or they have intentionally toyed around with my emotions, yes I’m a very delicate tech geek ..LOL!…Chuffed to bits about this and I’ll be first in the queue!…and hey!..checkout your Nexus 7…..this may have been slipped in during the last update!….. in settings>sound they now have setting for dock and docking…hows that for a bit of extra confirmation!December 16, 2012 at 1:32 pm #24700
