Hi, I have cracked the screen on my Nexus 7. There is only a relatively small crack and it’s only on the black part of the screen, but now only half of the touch screen works.
I have tried a few mobile repair shops, but it appears nobody can repair it for me.
I’ve noticed on ebay and YouTube that there are some replacement screens for sale, and tutorials, but I’m not very technical. Has oneone replaced a screen themselves? Was it that difficult? Do you think someone with absolutely no knowledge of this sort of thing could do it?
I did some research into this a while back and posted up to the blog here. To be honest it didn’t look especially straight forwards, especially as there is some debate about exactly what you need to buy to replace the screen.
Reading around it seems it is much easier to replace the whole touch unit than just replace the glass itself, but I’m not sure it’s something I’d want to try. It certainly seems possible as a number of people are posting up about how they did it but I think you’d have to be prepared to get your hands dirty. Watch a few of the vids and see if it’s something you would be comfortable doing.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who has done it and how they got on.
If you decide changing it is not for you, then you might be able to get a few quid by selling it as broken on ebay to put towards a replacement (the second generation model should be out this summer, so at least you could get an upgrade out of it!)
