After a chat with the nice man at the O2 shop in the Trafford Centre he has set up my HTC Desire to act as Wi Fi hotspot to my Nexus7. Its all included in my contract price too! All I need now is a decent phone signal. Makes my Nexus more flexible though. Thanks O2.
Out of curiosity, does the contract specifically allow tethering? I thought only 3 allowed this on their ‘All in one’ tarriffs but hopefully others are now giving the option.
tbh I’m sure many people do this anyway, I’m not sure they can’t really tell but it’s worth being aware if it does breach your T&Cs. Mind you, if the chap in the shop set you up they can’t really complain…
There was an ad in the shop to say it was included, not seen it on the website. Think they like to keep it quiet.
Definitely something I look forward to doing when I get a phone actually capable of doing it…
Got mine set up to do the same, although I’m using a custom android ROM and have no idea if I’m allowed to or not :)
Dont use it very often, but it’s a nice feature to have.
From what I’ve read, operators will block or throttle if they notice you doing this – but you’d kinda think it should be one of those grey areas where if you do it from time to time to check a few emails then why wouldn’t they let you.
But I guess the rules are in place to stop people abusing it, I imagine they price in certain infrastructure demand for phone users but tablet / PC users probably use more (?).
That said my mobile usage is generally between 500mb and 1gb on my phone and that’s with my slow ol’ Orange San Fran. I expect that to double when I get a proper phone which can browse , stream etc with ease.
