I’ve never had a smart phone or tablet, but just took delivery of a Nexus 7 with 3g bought from Google. Popped in to my local Vodafone store to see if I could get a mini SIm on Pay as You Go.The lady advised that their mini sims would not operate on Android, Can anyone help this beginner to find a 3g supplier giving UK coverage on 3g. Thanks.November 17, 2012 at 9:02 am #14960
One good provider for mobile data seems to be three.
To be honest I’m not up to speed on SIM card sizes, micro and nano Sims are for iPhones? Here’s a link to three anyways.
My other recommendation would be http://www.giffgaff.com
They do a variety of data plans at a reasonable price, they are kind of a no frills mobile company. For example 500mb usageNovember 17, 2012 at 9:32 am #14974
And check out Amazon too. You can get prepaid Sim cards there for data-only devices like the Nexus, (although I’m not sure about mini Sims), no contract needed. My Huawei mifi arrived this week, popped in a Sim card I bought from Amazon and my N7 works fine now anywhere there’s a signal. Need to get a holder for the car now.November 17, 2012 at 9:35 am #14977
Yes, I keep forgetting about Amazon’s sims, actually I’d probably do that (if/when I get a 3G N7!)November 17, 2012 at 11:29 am #15026
Thanks for that helpful info guys. Will let you know how I get on.November 30, 2012 at 5:04 pm #23052
I have had my Nx7 3G for 2 Days now. I can not get it to recognisae any sim cards.
I have an orange sim that is activated, valid and has credit, NX7 just says No Sim Card.
Tried valid sims from 3 and vodafone… same message….No Sim Card.
Tried to manually add APN details….Still no joy.
If anyone has bought one of the 3g NX7…Please tell me what Sim you are useing.
Thanks.November 30, 2012 at 5:45 pm #23069
I got a Giff Gaff sim as suggested on this forum, and it’s loaded – the only snag is that in my rural part of the country I don’t have a 3g signal !!December 2, 2012 at 1:42 am #23466
Google sending me another,,,they say this one has 3g issues.December 2, 2012 at 11:57 pm #23668
I obtained a data only mini SIM card from Vodafone which seems to work fine in my 3G Nexus 7.
The card is recognised by the device, and I have received text messages on it, although there appears to be no way to save, or reply to them!December 5, 2012 at 11:52 am #24168
I received my sim this morning from Vodafone and have installed it and can see a mobile signal (tuned wi-fi off) but i can’t do anything else. Can you please tell me what your settings are please? I am not on Vodafone and apart from ordering the sim I haven’t done anything else (ie load any money on sim or pay for a data package). I tried phoning Vodafone and unfortunately got cut off just as I was getting someone to deal with my query. I decided to trawl the net instead :)
Help very much appreciated. Wif’e’s Christmas present so determined to get it all working for the day!December 5, 2012 at 2:40 pm #24192
I don’t have a 3G model (alas) but I wonder if you have to enter the same kinda things as you do on a mobile. Actually logically I bet it is exactly the same.
SETTINGS -> MORE -> MOBILE NETWORKS -> ACCESS POINT NAMES -> CLICK THE 3 DOTS -> NEW APN
The APN settints are here:
set up internet vodafone
I’ve no experience of this but hope it might at least point you the right way. Please do let us know how you get on.
And to complete the setup, remember to add a bookmark back to us!!
Nice pressie, good job!December 5, 2012 at 4:10 pm #24198
Thanks Jez, I appreciate your time.
I tried what you suggested and followed the instructions from Vodafone but no joy yet. It must be something along these lines and I do have a receiving signal but no actual connectivity. I did ring Vodafone earlier and they checked and activated the SIM and I loaded it with money so this aspect should be all fine. I have also once selected the APN done the usual turn off/on and still no luck.
Still got a few weeks to go lol and demonstrates why you shouldn’t leave these things till last minute :) I might try Vodafone again tomorrow and see if they can help me any more unless anyone else has any ideas?
Thanks all!December 21, 2012 at 8:51 am #24775
I’ve now created a page to round up the best SIM deals out there at the moment. Hopefully I’ll maintain this and will always be interested to hear about any deals you come across.March 29, 2013 at 2:34 pm #26083
hi, I’ve bought n7, i was wondering, witch sim card will be best for me if i travel around Europe?April 3, 2013 at 2:56 pm #26131
got given a N7 by work, its got the slot for SIM, but I am using it by connecting to a mobile wireless hotspot that I can set up on my mobile (htc desire). Its password protected, so cant see any downside other that needing to carry the phone also, and the phone also losing powere at a quicker rate. Loading web pages seems quick. Those downsides may be too much for some, though.
