I always say that my external battery pack was one of the best purchases I ever made for my mobile phone. Let’s be honest, the modern smartphone battery doesn’t last that long under heavy use.
If I take my phone on a long train journey I want to be able to use it to browse the web, listen to music, watch movies without the fear of having a dead phone when I get to the other end, most likely just when I will need to rely on it to meet up, get a taxi, or fire up a local map.
This is wear the external battery pack is a total life saver. I have a high capacity battery that will happily power my phone for a whole journey, and easily the return journey too. It’s great for taking on holiday, a weekend festival or any other occasion where you might be away from the power for a few days at a time.

When choosing your battery pack there are a couple of things to consider:
- Charging ports: Some will have two ports which is useful if you travel as a couple. Or even more useful if you need to feed a couple of tablets for the kids.
- Capacity: The larger the capacity, the longer it’s going to last! But the higher capacity devices will be more expensive, larger and heavier. You need to consider the right balance.
I have one of the larger models and find it is no problem when packed up in the luggage. However if you want to carry something around with you at all times the “lipstick” style external charger might be a better bet.
Here are some battery packs from Anker, I have the Astro 3 myself and would gladly recommend it.
Another manufacturer I have had contact with, RavPower. Affordable and reliable.
