Now this is a rumour that I can buy into. Paul O’Brian, from the mobile community site Modaco, claims that his ‘well placed insider’ has news of a 3G Nexus 7. He goes on to say that ASUS are ramping up production and will ship in just 6 weeks time.
There are plenty of rumours flying around at the moment but this one makes a lot of sense. One of the big criticisms of the Nexus 7 to date is the lack of 3G support, especially given that this ultra portable tablet is made for carrying around. So I can well believe Google would want to follow it up with a 3G model.
Upset N7 Owners
Reading Twitter this morning, this news has evidently upset early adopters of the N7 who felt like they compromised by giving up 3G support. Although I can see this point of view I don’t think anyone bought without knowing this limitation and it was always likely that a follow up would emerge quickly. You just have to look back at how Apple iterated through the iPad generations to see how quickly these things move. My advice is to always look for the functionality you need at the price you are happy to pay.
I don’t think we should be surprised if a second generation Nexus 7 emerges next year, or even the rumoured Nexus 10. We should applaud that companies are listening to user’s feedback, and although there aren’t many things I’d want to change in the N7 I’m sure Goolge and ASUS will work to keep the technology fresh.
If this rumour is correct, we might expect a Nexus 7 3G UK release date towards the end of October. But remember this is just a rumour at this stage! If you need 3G connectivity then waiting, or looking at alternatives, makes sense.
I would expect a 3G model to attract a premium price and then of course you have to pay data costs. For this reason, I was only ever interested in the WiFi model!
